UT'S BRACKENRIDGE COULD HOST NEIGHBORHOOD

(Austin American-Statesman) – Two plans to reconstruct the University of Texas’ 350-acre Brackenridge tract into a living, working and playing space were presented Wednesday to the UT System Board of Regents by New York–based Cooper, Robertson & Partners LLP.
The first, the Village Plan, would add 15 million sf of residential, office and other space, including 8,698 housing units, to the green canvas. The university’s 82-acre biological field laboratory would be relocated to the Lower Colorado River Authority’s McKinney Roughs site in Bastrop County.
This option, preferred by Cooper, would cost $3.2 billion and include $130 million for streets, parks and other infrastructure.
The Park Plan, estimated at $2.6 billion, would retain but downsize the field lab and add 12 million sf and 6,645 housing units.
Both of the architectural and urban planning firm’s plans would erase the 141-acre Lions Municipal Golf Course and two student apartment complexes, and a university-owned apartment complex off Sixth St. would be enlarged.
The report will be reviewed by a special committee of regents established in August, and a public comment session will be held between now and the end of the academic year.
James Huffines, chairman of the regents, has stated that it could be months, or even years, before the board decides how to proceed, and he has emphasized that Cooper's recommendations are just that and are subject to modification.

Bagging For The Future!

Ok, so I finally have started using the "recycled" bags at the grocery & retail stores. I think they're the coolest thing! I have to admit that I blew them off at first; although being environmentally friendly is an important issue with me....But, I just didn't think I would remember to use them. Well, it is so easy now. I keep them in my car & utilize them at any opportunity I can. Not only are they better for the environment than plastic bags; they hold so much more & are easy to carry! I'll admit it did take me a couple of trips to the store of "forgetting" my recycled bags to actually remember to bring them on the next trip! But, now it's so automatic.

If you're not using the "recycled" bags; then please get a couple & try them out. The feeling of doing "good will" is awesome! If you don't have any; then LET ME KNOW. I'll send you some for FREE!

"Foreclosure Pets"

Distressed property owners are suffering as they are being forced to vacate their homes, BUT they aren't the only ones suffering........

A growing number of animals are too being left to fend for themselves! According to The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, over 1 million pets will be placed for adoption this year alone due to foreclosure. In addition, there are recent reports that show for one in every five foreclosed homes, there is at least one animal that is being left behind. It is a very sad problem. Leaving these "innocent victims of foreclosure" inside a property without food or water & in temperatures that are unbearable is cruel & the extreme weather of heat or cold can kill an animal very quickly. As we can all imagine a death like this is anything but painless.

If you or someone you know is in a situation like this, please do the right thing & make arrangements for your pet to be properly cared for....There are options!

A "Greener" Way To Live....

"Green" is a relatively new term for describing ideas that are environmentally sensitive, but the concept is timeless – particularly when it applies to the home.

Simple ways to live a "greener" life in your home include lowering the thermostat, use ceiling fans in the winter, use Energy Star rated appliances, fix any drippy faucets, install low flow faucets & shower heads, choose "green" flooring, & honor local guidelines for used paint can disposal. Obviously, these are just a few....but even with starting with one will help you to live a "greener" life.
